The Salinas Union High School District’s Alternative Education Department is dedicated to the educational task of developing each student’s potential for intellectual, emotional and physical growth in order to meet the challenges of the 21st century. We believe that all students can learn with the guidance of caring professional staff and a network of support services to meet the student’s needs. We are located at the Salinas Education Center, 20 Sherwood Place, Salinas, CA 93906.
Referral process
The referral process for any alternative program or alternative school starts with a meeting with the school counselor. The purpose of the meeting with the counselor is for the family to be aware of all programs (except Home Hospital instruction) and select the one that will meet the student’s needs. TheReferral to Alternative Education Programsis filled out and a parent signature is required. The Student Services Unit (SSU), composed of a multidisciplinary team of professionals, goes to the school sites to do intakes as needed. After the SSU intake, the school counselor notifies the family and the receiving school or program does the intake within 24 hours. You may contact the SSU at (831) 796-6904 to check on a status of a referral submitted or availability for any program. The Alternative Education Department has the following programs available: |

Home Hospital Instruction (HHI) Program
The Home Hospital Instruction (HHI) Program (California Education Code (EC) Section 42206.3 serves students who incur a temporary physical or mental disability, which makes attendance in the regular day classes or alternative education program impossible. Salinas Union High School District is responsible for instructing and educating pupils who must be hospitalized or remain at home due to a temporary but extended illness or disability and live within our attendance boundaries.
The goal of the Home Hospital Instruction Program is to maintain the pupil’s former level of performance while recovering by ensuring the continuity of educational services.
SUHSD offers one hour of instruction by a certificated staff for every day of instruction offered by the district in the regular education program at the student’s home or hospital. Services follow the district calendar.
Eligibility
Home Hospital Instruction is provided to students who are temporarily unable to attend school for an estimated time between 4-8 weeks due to a confirmed temporary physical or mental condition. The determination of a student’s inability to attend school will be made by a licensed physician, in writing. The physician provides a diagnosis, a copy of the latest medical report, specifies whether the student can or can not attend school and specifies duration of HHI.
A meeting with the school counselor is required to start the process. The Request for Home Hospital Form/ Peticion para Servicios Educativos En Casa should be turned in to the school or to our office with all signatures accompanied with all documents requested. The school counselor will work with the classroom teachers to provide work for the student while the Request is approved.
It is the family responsibility to notify the attendance office and provide a dr. note to verify student’s absences immediately. For more detailed information consult the Home Hospital Instruction Parent Handbook.
For certificated staff interested in working for the program, an Application for Home Hospital should be fill out and faxed our office at (831) 796-6915. Teachers will be required to attend an orientation to ensure compliance with the program objectives.
