ABOUT HARDEN MIDDLE SCHOOL

                                           MIDDLE SCHOOL UNIFORM POLICY

All middle schools in the Salinas Union High School District have Board-adopted, mandatory school uniforms. Uniforms were adopted to improve school safety, decrease antisocial behavior, and improve student self-esteem. The middle school uniform policy is consistent at all middle schools in the district.


Uniform Requirements


All schools require a uniform with a solid white top and solid black bottoms. 

  • The solid white shirt shall have sleeves and a collar and needs to be tucked in during class and passing periods.  Shirts shall not have logos, including sports logos and must cover the stomach area.  In lieu of the white shirt, students may wear school-sponsored shirts (e.g. Renaissance Shirts).
  • The black pants must be solid in color, hemmed, and an appropriate size so as to fit the student.  Pants shall not be overalls, spandex, nylon, nor sweat jogging pants.  
  • In lieu of the solid black pants, students may wear solid black skirts or shorts of an appropriate length, as deemed by school staff.
  • For outerwear (jackets, sweaters, sweatshirts) students may wear solid school colors; green, black, gray or white.  Sports jackets (i.e. 49ers, Raiders, etc.) and jackets with logos are not allowed.  During rainy weather, students may wear appropriate outerwear over their normal uniform, provided red or blue colors are not worn. 
  • Footwear – students are required to wear close-toed, close-heeled shoes (no sandals).  Shoes and laces shall not have red or blue on them.  Military style and steel-toed boots are not permitted.
  • Socks/stockings may not have blue or red colors.
  • Belt buckles must be plain (no initials, pictures, etc.) and cannot contain red or blue colors.
  • Undershirts must be solid white or black in color.  They are to be worn under the collared or school sponsored shirt.  Low-cut tank tops, or undershirts should not be seen.
  • Hairnets, bandanas and beanies may not be worn.  The only hats allowed are solid black baseball caps (with a bill facing forward) are allowed outside.
  • Hair accessories, jewelry, or other accessories may not have blue or red on it.

Any request for a uniform exemption must be submitted before the first day of school, or for new students within 72 hours of the date of enrollment. Students who have been placed on academic/behavior contracts will not be eligible for exemptions. Exemptions must be obtained through a conference with the school vice principal and are for the current year only. Students receiving an exemption must adhere to the general District Dress Code (see Dress Code).

TOPS:

Tops must be short or long sleeve (no sleeveless or spaghetti straps) and must be long osed).

BOTTOMS:

PANTS – Bottoms must be fitted at the waist and be no more than one size too large or small. Pants must be hemmed (no cut-offs) and be at least one inch off the ground. Pants may not have insignias, logos or labels showing.

SKIRTS:

Skirts and skorts may not be shorter than three inches above the knee and may not be longer than knee length.

OUTER GARMENTS:

JACKETS:

Jackets may not have insignias, labels, pictures, sports team logos (exception being school logo).

SWEATSHIRTS/SWEATERS:

The only sweatshirts allowed are HMS sweatshirt with the HMS logo. Sweaters may be pullover or button, crew neck or v-neck. Outer garments must be worn with an appropriate top.

SHOES/SOCKS:

Athletic shoes with logos may be worn. Shoes and shoelaces must be black or white. Harden shoelaces may be worn. No military style or steel-toed shoes, sandals, or backless shoes. Socks/leggings or tights may not have logos.

BELTS:

BELTS (optional) – must be the right size (nothing hanging down) and must be worn through the belt loops.

BUCKLES:

Buckles must be plain and may not have designs or initials.
SUSPENDERS – No suspenders.

HATS:

No hairnets, beanies, bandanas or sunglasses may be worn on campus or at school events.

JEWELRY/ACCESSORIES/BUTTONS:

Items for the hair, crosses or other accessories may only be black, white, silver, gold or green.

COLORS:

No gang related colors (including red, maroon, or any shade of blue) may be worn.
