Welcome to El Puente – an Alternative School of Choice for students in grades 7-12. Our mission is provide a learning environment and educational delivery system that best suits the academic abilities, learning styles and personal interests or each student. We provide a rigorous curriculum and a music program using independent study. Independent study is provided as an alternative instructional strategy, not an alternative curriculum. Independent study students work independently, according to a written agreement and under the general supervision of a credentialed teacher or teachers. While independent study students follow the district-adopted curriculum and meet the district graduation requirements, independent study offers flexibility to meet the student’s needs. El Puente School, approved by the Salinas Union High School District Board of Trustees to open on August of 2011,will offer two delivery modalities: traditional and on-line instructional modality. The school will seek accreditation from the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) the first semester of the school year 2011-2012. The El Puente School is located at the Salinas Education Center, 20 Sherwood Pl. in Salinas, CA. Teen Parent Program - The Village El Puente offers a nurturing and rich environment for teen parents who would like to continue working towards their high school diploma. The students come once a week for five hours. High quality child care is provided, as well as parenting classes. Admissions Salinas Union High School District students should see their counselor to request a transfer to the school. Parents and students will be asked to attend an orientation and students will take placement tests. Students from other Districts in Monterey County or adjacent counties should call the office for an appointment with our counselor first to determine if the school is the appropriate setting for the student. Students who are eligible to enroll may then complete the exit process at their current school, including filing an out of district transfer with their home district.
